Subject:
Please make the EPBC act stronger, not weaker
Dear Senator and Federal MPs, I am writing to express my dire concern for the Morrison Government's move to weaken our national environment law – the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). As you would be aware, on 28 January, the Government released the once-in-a-decade independent review of the EPBC Act, written by Professor Graeme Samuel. After a year of consultation with scientists, environment and business groups, and the community, Professor Samuel made 38 recommendations including a set of strong national environmental standards. I ask that you do all that you can to support the 38 recommendations of the independent review including, Professor Samuel's suite of legally outcome-based National Environmental Standards, an independent statutory Environment Assurance Commissioner, and an independent Office of Compliance and Enforcement. Professor Samuel’s findings were clear: the Act is failing to protect our wildlife and our iconic landscapes and seascapes, such as the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Reef. The report found that: “Australia’s natural environment and iconic places are in an overall state of decline and are under increasing threat. The environment is not sufficiently resilient to withstand current, emerging or future threats, including climate change. The environmental trajectory is currently unsustainable.” “The EPBC Act is outdated and requires fundamental reform”. After such a damning review of Australia’s environmental track record in protecting our wild places and species, we must urgently strengthen our national environment laws. Australia needs stronger laws, not weaker, to protect our wildlife and our iconic world heritage sites like the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Reef. Endangered species, such as turtles, sawfish, sea lions and whales all need the full protection of Australia’s national law to rebuild and recover population Thank you.
